Why Is TikTok Cropping My Slideshow Photos?

Updated

Short answer

Slideshow photos look cropped or boxed in on TikTok because the screen is 9:16 and most photos are not. A photo of a different shape either sits smaller with empty space around it, or loses its edges when it is zoomed or cropped to fill the screen. To stop it, crop every photo to 9:16 (1080x1920) yourself before uploading, and keep faces and text away from the edges. Instagram is stricter: as of October 2026 it crops anything taller than 3:4, so a 9:16 slide loses its top and bottom there.

Cut-off edges, empty bars and zoomed-in faces all come from one mismatch: the photo's shape and the screen's shape. Here is what each symptom means and how to fix it before you post.

Steps

  1. 1
    Check the shape
A TikTok slide is 9:16, taller than a typical 3:4 phone photo and much taller than a square. Look at each photo's width and height.
  2. 2
    Crop to 9:16 yourself
Crop to 1080x1920 in a photo editor so you decide what is cut, or let the free slideshow checker crop the whole set in your browser.
  3. 3
Pad when nothing can be cut
For screenshots, posters or text-heavy images, fit the whole image inside 9:16 on a blurred or solid background instead of cutting it.
  4. 4
Keep the subject in the middle
Faces, products and text belong in the center of the slide, away from the edges and from TikTok's buttons and caption.
  5. 5
    Use one shape per slideshow
Mixed shapes make slides change size as people swipe. Give every photo the same 9:16 shape.

Why phone photos don't fit

Phone cameras usually shoot 3:4 photos by default. A 1080x1440 photo is shorter than the 1080x1920 screen, so it can't fill it without either leaving space or losing its sides.

Empty bars or cut edges?

Empty space above and below, or around, a photo means it was shown at its own shape. Missing edges mean it was zoomed or cropped to fill the screen. Both disappear when the photo is 9:16 to begin with.

When it's the interface, not the crop

If the photo fills the screen but text near the edges disappears, TikTok's interface is covering it. In our measurements on a real iPhone, the buttons cover the right 20% of the screen between 44% and 84% of its height and the caption covers the bottom 14%. Move the text inward; the safe zone checker shows the exact areas.

Instagram crops differently

Instagram keeps photos between 1.91:1 and 3:4 and crops anything outside that range, and every item in a carousel shares one orientation (Instagram Help Center, October 2026). Export 1080x1350 (4:5) or 1080x1440 (3:4) for Instagram; the carousel splitter makes seamless slides from one wide image.

FAQ

What size stops TikTok from cropping slideshow photos?

9:16, which is 1080x1920 at full resolution. A photo that already matches the screen has nothing to crop.

Why do my photos have bars around them on TikTok?

They aren't 9:16, so they don't fill the vertical screen. Crop them to 9:16, or pad them on a blurred background so the space looks intentional.

Why does TikTok zoom in on my photo?

A photo that isn't 9:16 has to lose its edges to fill the screen when you zoom or crop it in the editor. Crop to 9:16 before uploading to choose what stays.

How do I stop Instagram cutting off my TikTok slides?

Post a 1080x1350 copy on Instagram. A 1080x1920 slide is taller than 3:4, the tallest shape Instagram keeps.

Can I post square photos in a TikTok slideshow?

Yes, they post, but they don't fill the screen, so they sit in the middle with space around them.
